Our Commitment to Accurate, Independent Journalism
Mzansi Online is an independent South African digital news publication dedicated to delivering timely, accurate and fair reporting on the stories that matter to South Africans. The following standards govern every article we publish.
Accuracy and Verification
Every claim published on Mzansi Online must be verifiable. Our journalists are required to cross-reference at least two independent sources before publishing factual assertions. Headlines must accurately reflect the content of the article and must not mislead or sensationalise. If a story is developing, it will be labelled as such and updated as new verified information becomes available.
Independence and Impartiality
Mzansi Online maintains strict editorial independence. Our coverage is not influenced by advertisers, political parties, government entities or commercial interests. Journalists must declare any conflict of interest relating to stories they cover. Opinion and analysis pieces are clearly labelled as such and are distinct from news reporting.
Original Reporting
We are committed to producing original reporting that adds value beyond what is already in the public domain. Our journalists provide context, analysis and on-the-ground perspective. We do not republish press releases verbatim or repurpose other outlets’ work without proper attribution. Quoted material from other publications is clearly attributed.
Fairness and Right of Reply
When a story involves criticism or allegations against an individual or organisation, Mzansi Online endeavours to seek a response before publication. Where a response is not received within a reasonable timeframe, this will be noted in the article. We treat all subjects of our reporting with dignity and fairness.
Transparency
Mzansi Online is transparent about who we are, who owns us and how our journalism is funded. Our editorial team is listed on our website with their beats and contact information. Sponsored content, if any, is clearly labelled as “Sponsored” and is kept separate from editorial content.
Use of AI and Technology
Mzansi Online uses AI-assisted tools in the research and drafting phases of some articles. All AI-assisted content undergoes editorial review before publication to ensure accuracy, fairness and compliance with our standards. We do not publish AI-generated content without human editorial oversight. We are committed to responsible use of technology in service of quality journalism.
Privacy and Sensitivity
We respect the privacy of individuals and handle sensitive topics, including crime, trauma and vulnerable communities, with care. We comply with South Africa’s Protection of Personal Information Act (POPIA) in the collection and handling of any personal data. We do not publish identifying details of minors or victims of sexual violence without explicit consent.
