Police Fire Rubber Bullets Again To Protesters

They vandalised Walter Sisulu Square, broke shop windows and looted shops in the early hours of yesterday morning.

A fight erupted between cops and residents when the community of Kliptown, Soweto protested yesterday.

Protesters went on the rampage and caused chaos on the main roads leading to the kasi. The residents also blockaded streets with rocks and burning tyres.

The protest was triggered by the disconnection of illegal electricity from the railway station on Wednesday.

There was a high police presence in the area as the furious protesters threatened to cause more damage and loot more shops.

A community leader said the protestors want house.

“If they want streets without crime and illegal connections, they must give us houses. We’ve applied for houses for so long,” he claimed.

The leader accused government officials of corruption and favouritism.

Joburg housing spokeswoman Bubu Xuba said the department had been holding regular meetings with community leaders.

“Development projects are on the way and the tender will be advertised soon. This will kick off the project and restore hope to the people of Kliptown.”

Police spokesman Captain Kay Makhubele said police will open a case of malicious damage of property after a cop car was stoned.

He said: “No arrests have been made so far.”
