7 suspects accused of being behind a cash-in-transit heist that resulted in a shootout with police in which one alleged thug was shot dead are expected to appear soon in Lebowakgomo Magistrate’s Court.
A G4S vehicle was hit on Tuesday afternoon as it left a Lebowakgomo business with three canisters of cash, Limpopo police spokesperson Captain Mamphaswa Seabi confirmed.
“They were brandishing guns and took the trolley carrying the money. Witnesses saw what was happening and contacted the police,” he explained.
“Officers who responded saw the suspects fleeing and stopped them in their tracks A shootout ensued on the R579 and one suspect was shot.”
A silver BMW, hijacked in Pretoria, as well as a red Kia, a white Ford Ranger and red VW Polo were seized. The cash canisters were retrieved.
Three pistols and a rifle were also confiscated.
On Wednesday another firearm suspected to have been used by the robbers was recovered by locals collecting water from underneath a nearby bridge.
“The firearm was found on the ground. It is suspected it was thrown by the fleeing suspects,” Seabi said.
It is understood that 10 people were involved in the heist, and police are still searching for two other suspects.
The suspects, aged between 27 and 52, have been charged with armed robbery, possession of stolen motor vehicles and possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition.
