SAMUEL’S dream of designing Mzansi’s best sports car is still going strong.
SunReaders first saw Samuel Ngubeni’s car when it appeared in the People’s Paper in 2014.
Two years later, major improvements have been added.
Samuel (39) from Siluma View in Katlehong, Ekurhuleni, calls his car the Big Animal.
He told Daily Sun that the name was inspired by Africa’s Big 5.
The new and improved Big Animal, nicknamed “46664” after former president Nelson Mandela’s prison number, is fitted with a denim interior and exterior.
Samuel used an F1 McLaren steering wheel for comfortable driving. The Big Animal is also fitted with a computer for entertainment, DStv, navigation and Skype.
The stylish vehicle now has a proper speedometer and a three-litre engine.
Samuel said the car is better than the first model in many ways.
“It is more comfortable and can do long trips, such as going to Durban and back.”
Samuel is working on making the car roadworthy and plans to register it with the South African Bureau of Standards.
“My dream is to inspire young ones to take their talents seriously,” he said.
“I also want to be recognised as an African car designer deserving of a chance, because we do not have any car designers.”
Residents who saw the car being driven stared at it in amazement as it passed by with its big engine roaring like a lion.
Samuel’s neighbour, Dumisani Machete, called the car a work of art.
“Samuel is talented. I’ve seen him doing many things, but this is genius,” said Dumisani.
“If he can only get sponsorship to help him build this car, his dream will go a long way.
