A suspect has been arrested in connection with the murder of  DA councillor in the Northern Cape Johannes Baatjies.

The Hawks in Northern Cape said they had taken in the 29-year old suspect on Friday.


Baatjies’s body was found was on Thursday morning in Postmasburg with gun shot wounds.

A passenger he was travelling with was wounded and taken to hospital. He is still in a critical condition.

SuspectPreliminary investigation revealed that the 49-year-old Baatjies was unsuspectingly lured into the death trap.

He took his business associate with to assist him in a business meeting arranged at the time of his untimely death, police said.

The suspect was arrested on Friday and is expected to appear in the Postmasburg Magistrate’s Court on Monday.

Hawks spokesperson Brigadier Hangwani Mulaudzi said the suspect was likely to face charges of murder and attempted murder.

Police also discovered that the suspect was implicated in armed robbery cases.
