THE crippling drought over parts of Mzansi has claimed its first human casualty.
Sello Majoang (56) collapsed on Wednesday while queuing with hundreds of others waiting for a water truck in Matwabeng, Senekal.
He died later at the provincial hospital in Bethlehem, Free state.
Nthapeleng Ntleru (49) said he was with his late friend earlier on the day when Sello started complaining about dizziness. He persuaded him to find shade not far from where they were standing.
“He was a healthy person who participated in sports and he once owned a football team called Mighty Swallows FC,” the friend said.
His son Aubrey Majoang (27) said:
“My father was a loving person, a dedicated sportsman and a friendly man who would never start a fight with anyone.”
Councillor Morena Mabeleng from Matwabeng ward 7 said: “I wish to pass my condolences to the bereaved family on behalf of my office and in my capacity as a neighbour to the family.
“This is unfortunate, especially as it happened two days before Christmas Day. We intend visiting the family to find the state of things. We will help the family where we can. We are really saddened by his death.”
