Numsa Man Monde Radu killed in PE. A who escaped death twice was not so lucky when he was attacked for a third time. Monde Radu (55), a well-known member of Numsa in Port Elizabeth, died in a hail of bullets on Wednesday afternoon.
His murder in KwaZakhele kasi came shortly after he had told his mum he was going into hiding.
His family told Daily Sun he worked for Continental Tyres but he was on leave for a week while he looked for a safe house.
His traumatised mum, gogo Nomhle Radu (73), said: “Monde called me earlier in the day to say he wanted to use my bakkie to look for a new house in Motherwell. He said he wasn’t safe at his place in Zwide.”
Gogo Nomhle said the first attempt on Monde’s life was two weeks ago when shots were fired at him outside his house. Two days later, he was shot at again but the bullet hit the door post. The mum couldn’t hold back her tears as she remembered Wednesday’s events.
“He went outside to fetch a parcel for his son from the bakkie. We heard several gunshots but I thought the Somali spaza shop owners in my yard were being attacked,” she said.
“When the shooting stopped, I went outside and saw my son lying in a pool of blood.”
Constable Mncedi Mbombo said several shots were fired into the victim’s upper body. He was rushed to Livingstone Hospital and died on arrival.
“A case of murder was opened and we are still looking for suspects,” Mbombo said.
