When Nyiko Nkuna’s cousin lured him to Joburg with the promise of a job, he didn’t know he was in for misery.
The 35-year-old from Giyani in Limpopo ended up unemployed and in debt!
“My cousin, Bukuna, told me he knew a prophet named Melody who could help me get a job as a driver. I recruited two other people for jobs, David Tshabalala and Rodney Jeleni and in April, we moved to Katlehong in Ekurhuleni. During this time, Melody was sending me SMSes promising me job interviews.” said Nyiko.
He said a month after he arrived in Ekurhuleni, Melody told him she needed more people to fill jobs and he convinced his wife, Salphy (28) and David’s wife, Charmaine (26) to travel to Joburg too.
After a few weeks, Melody told them to move to Kempton Park. Nyiko said from May to September, they were sent to malls to order clothes for their promised jobs. He claimed Melody convinced David to sell his Fiat Uno to pay her R1 500.
“At the beginning of this month, Melody disappeared. We were shocked to discover later that Melody didn’t exist and that we had been talking to Bukuda’s wife, Ntwanana! She had been posing as Melody to rob us blind.
“After confessing, Bukuda told me he had taken his wife to a prophet to be exorcised. He said demons and snakes came out of her! We spent more than R15 000 on petrol and rent for jobs that didn’t exist and now we’re deep in debt,” said Nyiko.
When the SunTeam contacted Bukuda, he said: “I don’t have time for this bullshit! Don’t even call this number again or something will happen!”
