SELLO Maake ka Ncube is a man of many talents. Most people know him as an actor, but he is also a poet.
The legendary actor, who stars on e.tv’s Scandal!, is ready to dazzle audiences with his words.
He is billed to perform at Poet In A Suit, which will be held at the Durban Playhouse tomorrow.
Speaking to SunBuzz, Sello said he is ready to reveal his poetic side to audiences. He said: “Poetry has always been a part of my life. I have written poems such as Siyazazi and Thandeka’s Smile. Those who attend will see me perform self-written poems, as well as poems written by Shakespeare,” said Sello.
“I feel honoured to perform at the event.
“I didn’t expect to be part of it. It is going to be exciting to do something other than acting.”
Poet In A Suit is an annual event founded by KZN poet Mxolisi Mtshali. He rose to fame in 2009 after he performed his poem titled Zulu Love Letter.
Mxolisi said he organised the show after he realised that poets weren’t taken seriously.
“People don’t take us seriously.
“Maybe it’s because of our dress code.
“We are spiritual artists, so we dress like crazy people.”
He said some event organisers don’t pay poets because they don’t respect their craft.
“Our event requires the poets to wear suits during their performances.
“We want to show business people and event organisers that we are also business-minded.
“We want to be respected and taken seriously.
“We need to be paid for bookings,” said Mxolisi.
Mxolisi said he plans to host the event on a monthly basis, with the assistance of the eThekwini Municipality.
“People should expect fireworks. They will not regret coming to the show,” said Mxolisi.
Poets Thuli Zuma, Vusi Phakathi, Mandulo Sithole and Mpho Ngcobo will also recite their poems at the event.
Tickets are available at Computicket for R120.
