A jealous police officer allegedly followed his ex-girlfriend to see what she was doing after they broke up.
And when he found her walking arm in arm with her new lover, he allegedly shot her to death.
Zandile Mahlaba (21) died when she was shot several times. Her boyfriend was also struck and is in hospital in a critical condition.
The suspect, a 30-year-old constable from Umsinga, was found a few hours later.
He was hiding in the sugar cane fields in New Hanover, kilometres away from the scene, near the office where he was stationed.
Police spokesman Colonel Jay Naicker said he was found by Crime Intelligence members.
“He was in possession of a firearm which was seized by the police. He will appear in court soon facing charges of murder and attempted murder. The dead woman’s new lover sustained critical injuries,” said Naicker.
