Actor Jim Carrey is facing charges of wrongful death and drug violations after his late girlfriend’s husband accused the Hollywood star of giving her the painkillers she used to kill herself a year ago.
Mark Burton, who claims to be the husband of Cathriona White at the time of her death, says Carrey illegally obtained the painkillers and gave them to her knowing she was prone to depression.
Carrey’s girlfriend was found dead in a California home in 2015 and it was later ruled that she took her own life by overdosing
“After obtaining these drugs illegally and under a bogus name (‘Arthur King’), Mr. Carrey proceeded to provide the prescription drugs to Cathriona White, despite knowing that White was “prone to depression and had previously attempted to take her own life,” reads an extract from the suit.
The legal documents also claim that Carrey has tried to hide the fact that he obtained the drugs and provided them to his girlfriend.
Carrey has responded calling the claims a “terrible shame” and says that he could have easily made this go way in a “back room” but says that he will defend himself.
“I will not tolerate this heartless attempt to exploit me or the woman I loved. Cat’s troubles were born long before I met her and sadly her tragic end was beyond anyone’s control.
