HE WAS stripped, moered and made to walk through the streets of Giyani, Limpopo. The 30-year-old suspect was caught by people minutes after allegedly robbing a woman of R3 000 at an ATM on Saturday.
The woman was allegedly at the ATM withdrawing her money when the suspect, pretending to help, exchanged her card for his.
The woman’s card was swallowed by the ATM, yet an SMS came in saying she had withdrawn R3 000.
She screamed and cried out for help. Shoppers immediately gave chase. A witness said that the suspect was not very fast, as he was caught within a few metres of the scene of the crime.
“After being questioned, the man said he was from Tzaneen and that he was only in Giyani to rob people. This angered shoppers and they started beating him,” said eyewitness.
He was stripped naked and made to walk around town.
The crowd even told him to stop covering his penis.
He was later rescued by the police.
A shopper said since December many people have been robbed in
Giyani, especially at ATMs.
She said thieves deserve mob justice.
“We are tired of such criminals. When we call the police they don’t arrest them,” she said.
Giyani police spokesman Warrant Officer Thomas Makhubela said the suspect was admitted to Nkhensani Hospital in a critical condition.
He said the woman who was robbed has not opened a case and warned people not to take the law into their own hands.
Later a man believed to be the suspect’s accomplice was later on Saturday caught on camera at the supermarket where the ATM is based.
