University students should give Parliament the “space” it needed to conduct its oversight regarding fee increases, the National Council of Provinces chairperson, Thandi Modise, said on Wednesday.

She said as mothers, they sympathised with students and parents over high fees.

“We propose that Parliament be given the space to get into these matters to look at the fee rises for the year 2016,” she said.

Modise said oversight committees could interrogate the medium term budget and allow them to form responses.

“We also urge university councils to review their fees so amicable solutions can be found,” she said.

Hundreds of students stormed the gates of Parliament on Wednesday, soon followed by police who used stun grenades to disperse the crowd.

Modise said the incidents were “unprecedented”.

“As Parliament we regret this incident as we have noted a few students as well as a few members of public order police were injured in their attempt to stop the march by students.”

She said they appreciated that Higher Education Minister Blade Nzimande had tried to address students.
