Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu is on the mend and will soon be able to return home, the Desmond & Leah Tutu Legacy Foundation said on Thursday.

The Archbishop has been in and out of hospital since July for intensive antibiotic treatment for an infection and related complications.

But Tutu told former president FW de Klerk, who visited him in hospital on Thursday, that his health was continuing to improve.

The foundation said in a statement that after chatting for a few minutes, laughter filled the ward when De Klerk, alluding to a difficult phase of his relationship with Tutu during the Truth and  Reconciliation Commission, said he didn’t want to stay long and tire the Arch.

“I tired you enough in the past – you tired me too!” he said, jokingly.

De Klerk said he was looking forward to watching the 83-year-old Tutu on the dance floor when he celebrated his 80th birthday early next year.

“The archbishop responded that if he didn’t feel up to dancing, he would certainly pray for the former president. Mr De Klerk jumped at the offer,” the foundation said.

Tutu is being treated for inflammation. His current stay is unrelated to the infection which saw him hospitalised in July.

Tutu was discharged from hospital on August 4 after he was treated for an infection as a result of treatment for prostate cancer.

He has been fighting the disease for the past 18 years.
