DOWNTOWN Joburg was the scene of more chaos today when gatvol workers protested about their “pitiful salaries”.
According to The Star, Joburg Road Agency (JRA) workers took to the streets yesterday to make their fury known. Pixley ka Seme Street was blocked to traffic. On the same street today, a truck was torched. Dressed in orange overalls, they gathered outside the JRA’s office and toyi-toyied.
Metro cops desperately tried to redirect traffic while having to deal with enraged commuters.
The road workers apparently earn about R5 000 a month. There is a dispute over whether the 7% increase they say they were given last year was actually implemented.
JRA worker, Bernard Makhubela was quoted as saying: “We earn peanuts; are we the workers or the slaves?”.
JRA spokeswoman Bertha Peter-Scheepers confirmed yesterday that the JRA board agreed for a delegation to meet with the union.
Samwu deputy regional chairman Vuyani Singozo could not be reached for comment.
