WHAT was meant to be a holy and powerful Easter ceremony at Richards Bay, KZN, for the Umuziwokuthula Church of Zion turned into a tragedy.
On Saturday during a break in the Easter sermons, brothers Bhuti (15) and Bheki Mthembu (11) slipped away from the tent for a swim at Pelican Island beach.
But instead of having fun, both brothers drowned!
On hearing the news, everything stopped as church members rushed to the beach to search for the two boys, but their bodies were nowhere to be found.
The boy’s aunt, Sophy Mthethwa (54) said the boys had sneaked out and gone to swim with their cousin, Mxolisi Mthethwa (14).
She said a while later Mxolisi came running back and told them the brothers from Bethal in Mpumalanga had drowned.
“We all rushed to the beach to see if we could save them, but it was too late,” said Sophy.
“The boys had swum in a place where there were no lifeguards.”
Bhuti apparently went into the sea first and started struggling.
When Bheki saw his brother was drowning, he went into the waves to try and save him, but both drowned.
Major Thulani Zwane said two inquest dockets were opened at the Richards Bay cop shop after two boys drowned in the sea on Saturday.
