POLICE have warned motorists, especially pick-up trucks and small delivery van drivers, to be on the lookout for fong kong traffic cops on the N12.

This follows a sudden increase in the number of incidents where fake traffic cops hijack and rob people on the highway near Zuurbekom in the West Rand.

Sergeant Linki Lefakane said the suspects dress like traffic cops.

She said: “They drive around in a white Golf, white Polo and white VW Caddy. One of the victims was stopped at about 11.45pm by a white VW Polo with four men, all wearing traffic uniforms.

“They all came towards his car – two on the passenger side and two on his side – and demanded to see his licence.

“While he was busy looking for it, one of the traffic cop gang members pointed a gun at him and pushed him inside the vehicle, covered his face and drove off.

“They dropped him at Jabulani in Soweto. He then went to report the matter at the local cop shop.”

In another incident, the victim was hijacked on the N12 by the suspects from the white VW Caddy. They later dropped the victim at an unknown place. “The vehicles that are being targeted are mostly Hyundai H100s and other pick-up trucks,” said Lefakane.
