A GANG of thugs are on the run after robbing a supermarket. The heavily armed men stormed into the SuperSpar at Philani Valley Mall in Umlazi, Durban, in the early hours of yesterday morning. They stole an undisclosed amount of money.
A witness said the men came into the store through the staff gate at about 1.30am.
“Night shift workers, including cleaners and cooks, were on duty at the time.
“They told us to lie on the floor. They then took money from the tills and fled the scene,” said the witness.
Centre manager Hloniphani Mpanza declined to comment, only saying the matter was in the hands of the cops.
“The complainant alleged that gunmen entered the store in the early hours of the morning and took an undisclosed amount of cash before fleeing the scene.
“No shots were fired and no one was injured. A case of business robbery was opened at Bhekithemba cop shop and no arrests have been made.”
- On Tuesday, Umlazi cops bust wanted suspects for business robberies. They were allegedly targeting Shoprite Usave and other businesses in Umlazi.
Police spokesman Lieutenant-Colonel Thulani Zwane said: “The cops followed up information about suspects who were wanted for business robberies. They arrested four suspects aged between 30 and 41. Two of them were found with unlicensed firearms and ammunition.
“The suspects are expected to appear in court soon.”
