There were bodies and blood on the road yesterday after thugs and cops got into a shoot-out. According to Joburg Metro police officer Xolani Fihla, the incident on the Soweto highway between Orlando and Noordgesig happened after cops at Brixton Police Station received a call about three men robbing students of their cellphones. The flying squad and Brixton cops immediately gave chase.
As the suspects approached Meadowlands, they turned at a traffic circle and were stopped by officers from Orlando Police Station.
One of the suspects started shooting from the car and the cops returned fire.
All three occupants then got out of the vehicle and the cops shot two of them. The third one, believed to have been the gunman, reportedly dropped his firearm and tried to escape. He was jumping over a steel barrier when he was shot in the head and side. All three men were confirmed dead on the scene.
Hundreds of residents of Noordgesig came out of their homes as the flying squad helicopter flew over the bodies of two of the suspects lying on the road.
Gauteng police spokesman Captain Tsekiso Mofokeng said: “The suspects were fatally wounded during a shoot-out with the police. This happened after the suspects robbed the complainant of her belongings and she reported the matter to the Brixton police. Two firearms and the stolen goods were recovered.”
