PHILLIPINE Ramonyai says she was beaten by her history teacher for being two minutes late for class!
The 20-year-old matric pupil at Ramashobohle High School in Makeketela Village, outside Turfloop in Limpopo, said the teacher told her and others to go to his office at the beginning of the month and assaulted them with a broomstick.
“He hit me 26 times with the stick and I soon realised something was wrong with my hand.
“I reported the matter to the principal but nothing happened,” she said.
She was later taken to Manwkeng Hospital by her parents and the doctors advised her to open an assault case.
This was after it was found that some bones in her right hand were broken.
“The teacher is very proud and has a problem with his temper.
“I thought after what he did he would come to my home to apologise but he never did,” said the sobbing matric pupil.
The incident has come at the worst possible time for Phillipine as matrics across the country are currently writing preliminary exams.
“Phillipine is unable to use her right hand and the principal has had to organise for her to dictate her exam answers to a grade 11 pupil to write them down.
Limpopo Education Department spokesman Naledzani Rasila said corporal punishment is against the law.
“The teacher accused of this action will be taken to a disciplinary inquiry to face the law,” he said.
Warrant Officer Malan Nchabeleng of Mankweng Police Station confirmed a case of common assault was opened against the teacher and said he had already appeared in the Mankweng Magistrates Court.
The investigation is still underway.
