The bloody onslaught against Mzansi’s men and women in blue continues! Two more cops died in a hail of bullets yesterday afternoon after a gang of thugs travelling in two cars hunted them down!
The policemen, a constable (40) and warrant officer (50) from the family violence, child protection and sexual offences investigations unit were travelling in an unmarked Ford Figo when they became the target of the eight thugs chasing them in two VW Golf cars with NW registration plates.
The cops’ car apparently crashed into a passing Mercedes Benz when the thugs opened fire, riddling the car with bullets.
One of the officers died at the scene in Dobsonville extension 2, Soweto. His body lay slumped in the car while his colleague was airlifted to Milpark Hospital in a desperate attempt to save his life. He died on arrival at the hospital.
The latest murders have brought the number of cops killed since the beginning of the year to 58. Of these, 27 died while on duty . . .
The incident left witnesses shocked.
Lulama Mhlungu (27) told Daily Sun the incident made him feel hopeless.
“Where is ubuntu? How can one just kill like that?” he asked.
“We were chilling at the car wash when suddenly we heard gun shots. Just like that, a life was gone,” Lulama said.
Linah Monnaemang (71), who lives in a house nearby, said: “We all ran for our lives. It was a war. It was terrible.”
Briefing the media at the scene, Colonel Lungelo Dlamini said the motive for the killing was not known. He said the police were investigating.
Dlamini said the two cops were stationed at Moroka Police Station.
“Two firearms and some dockets were stolen from the cops,” Dlamini said. He said the police would come up with strategies to stop this happening again.
